Paper gsm
80gsm to 170gsm
80gsm – 100gsm paper is commonly used as a photocopy / home office paper or notepads, it is thin and extremely flexible / foldable and tends to have limited opacity (the ink may show through from one side to the other). Moving up the weight scale 100 - 120gsm is often used as nice company letterhead as it's a bit thicker and feels more substantial.
130gsm – 170gsm paper tends to be used as text pages in brochures or stand-alone leaflets and tends to have a good opacity and is still flexible enough to fold.
190gsm to 300gsm
190-200gsm is on the thinner end of card and needs to be creased before folding so if you are folding across the grain of the paper you are more likely to get cracking on the folds.
250-300gsm is a good card weight and is often used for standalone flyers or brochure covers. The ink won't show through at all from the other side, it definitely needs creasing before it is folded and lends itself well to other finishing options e.g. laminating, punching to shape.
300gsm to 400gsm
350-400gsm is a heavyweight card used regularly for business cards, invites, folders and thicker covers on brochures. It is totally opaque and fairly rigid. This weight also needs creasing before it is folded and lends itself well to other finishing options e.g. laminating, punching to shape.
400gsm and more
400gsm and more. Similar to 350gsm-400gsm but even more rigid and thicker. Lends itself to high quality invites and holds extra finishes extremely well. E.g. punching to shape, UV varnishing or crease and folding.
